Academics : Music
Each student that participates in the Music program understands that there is a $100 fee for lessons and a $50 instrumental rental fee. Lessons are conducted by Music instructors hired by West Catholic. Each student in the music program also realizes that the regularly scheduled weekly rehearsals and public performances are MANDATORY and will be considered as a significant part of the performance grade in ALL music classes.
753 - Beginning Strings
Students will have the opportunity to select and study one of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, and string bass. They will be expected to become proficient enough to play in the concert at the end of their first year of study. The curriculum includes studies in the fundamentals of music theory and musical history.
754 - Advanced Strings
Students will progress in technical proficiency on their string instruments and acquire experience in ensemble playing. The curriculum includes further study in music theory and music history. Studies in music theory will culminate in the fourth year of study with the writing of an original composition which will be orchestrated by the student. All advanced string players are part of the orchestra and are required to attend all orchestra rehearsals. Placement in the string ensemble will be by invitation only.
755 - Beginning Woodwinds
Students will have the opportunity to select and study one of the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon. They will be expected to become proficient enough to play in the concert at the end of their first year of study. The curriculum includes studies in the fundamentals of music theory and music history.
756 - Advanced Woodwinds
Students will progress in technical proficiency on their woodwind instruments and acquire experience in ensemble playing. The curriculum includes further study in music theory and music history. Studies in music theory will culminate in the fourth year of study with the writing of an original composition which will be orchestrated by the student. All advanced woodwind players are part of the orchestra and are required to attend all orchestra rehearsals. Placement in the jazz band will be by invitation only.
757 - Beginning Brass
Students will have the opportunity to select and study one of the following instruments: trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, French horn, and tuba. They will be expected to become proficient enough to play in the concert at the end of their first year of study. The curriculum includes studies in the fundamentals of music theory and musical history.
758 - Advanced Brass
Students will progress in technical proficiency on their brass instruments and acquire experience in ensemble playing. The curriculum includes further study in music theory and music history. Studies in music theory will culminate in the fourth year of study with the writing of an original composition which will be orchestrated by the student. All advanced brass players are part of the orchestra and are required to attend all orchestra rehearsals. Placement in the jazz band will be by invitation only.
759 - Beginning Percussion
Students are introduced to the snare drum for the study of drum rudiments. The students are introduced to a variety of pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments. Students will be expected to become proficient enough to play in the concert at the end of the first year of study. The curriculum includes study of the fundamentals of music theory and music history.
760 - Advanced Percussion
Students will progress in technical proficiency on their percussion instruments and acquire experience in ensemble playing. The curriculum includes further study in music theory and music history. Studies in music theory will culminate in the fourth year of study with the writing of an original composition which will be orchestrated by the student. All advanced percussionists are part of the orchestra and are required to attend all orchestra rehearsals. Placement in the jazz band will be by invitation only.
