Requirements
All students must take four years of English at a track level determined by the department and the administration. All students are required to complete summer assignments.
To improve standardized scores on the Terra Nova, PSAT, and the SAT, the English Department stresses an on-going program consisting of sentence error analysis, timed readings, and SSR(Sustained Silent Reading). To foster and encourage effective writing, all students participate in the Laws of Life essay contest, funded by the Templeton Foundation. Summer reading is also required. For honors courses, there are also mandatory written assignments based on additional summer readings.

Genre Studies/Paragraph Coherence/ Vocabulary Enrichment This course is designed to meet the needs and enhance the skills of superior English students. Grammar and mechanics are reviewed with emphasis on the development of sentence patterns and paragraph writing. Students read, write, and speak about novels, plays, short stories, and poems. Major emphasis is placed on vocabulary development. Speech exercises are incorporated in to the total course curriculum. Summer reading is required.
